Utah Personalized Plate Rules & How to Order

Utah lets you put up to 7 characters on a standard personalized plate. Some designs are shorter: the “In God We Trust” plate allows up to 5, special group plates up to 5, and motorcycle plates up to 5 (4 on “In God We Trust” or special group motorcycle plates). You must already have a vehicle registered in Utah to apply.

The Utah DMV does not publish a flat personalization price on its plates page — you pay the applicable personalized plate fee at checkout, and special group plates add a contribution to the organization the design supports. Check the current amount in the Motor Vehicle Portal before you commit. Orders generally arrive within eight weeks.

How to get a personalized plate in Utah

2. Sign in to the Utah Motor Vehicle Portal (MVP) at mvp.tax.utah.gov, where you can also preview how the wording looks on different plate designs.
3. Request a personalized plate and submit up to three combinations in order of preference, so a rejection doesn’t send you back to the start.
4. Pay the applicable personalized plate fees, then allow about eight weeks for delivery. You can also order in person at a Utah DMV office.
